Introducing, our first of many pet-friendly additions to our catalog: the Calathea Lancifolia aka Rattlesnake Plant belonging to the Marantaceae family. Marantaceae is nicknamed the ‘Prayer Plant’ family due to the daily movements of the plants’ leaves. Plants in this family move their leaves up at nighttime and lower them in the daytime in accordance to a circadian rhythm.
With their expansive leaves, Calatheas are excellent air-purifiers. We recommend Calatheas as a plant to keep in the bedroom: their peaceful leaves, oxygenating properties, and humidifying capabilities will help you drift off at night and feel refreshed in the morning.
The light requirements make this plant an attractive choice for lower light homes. It is a great low light plant and will do best in medium to low light. Direct sunlight will result in bleaching the leaves.
Water the Rattlesnake enough to keep it moist regularly, but not oversaturated. In the late Spring through August, water more frequently to keep the soil damp, but never waterlogged. In the winter, only water when the topsoil becomes dry to the touch. Be sure to be cautious as water standing in the pot means wet roots, which Calathea does not like. Extended periods of dryness can result in leaves curling and brown leaf tips or edges. Do not allow the potting soil to dry out completely.
They are beautifully marked with various shades of green, wavy edges that magnify those shades, and green spots that resemble small leaves. Even their undersides do not lack in magnificence, being a reddish-purple shade. Grows moderately fast and up to 2ft.
